Aurea Catena
Woven stained porcelain
300cm x 50cm
This piece was made for Anima, a group show I curated in Caroline Gardens Chapel, Peckham. It draws on the history of the magic carpet, originating in the prayer rug as a means of travelling to another land through the power of thought. Anima is taken here as the animating principle by which the inanimate object can form the basis of imaginary voyage, as in eighteenth century Frenchman Xavier de Maistre’s ‘Voyage around my Room’, in which he chronicles the furniture of his prison as if describing scenes from a journey to strange lands.
