Cardinal
Watermarked paper, thread, wood, pigment, LEDs
190x200x50cm
Watermarked paper squares are stitched together to form a quilt-like semicircle, suspended between two tall structures and hanging loosely like a garment. Illumination from behind seeps through the branching network of watermarks, which traces the form of a mycelium. The thread-like hyphae weave across the dark paper sections, creating an image of an invisible subterranean tracery of symbiotic filaments.
The form and presentation of Cardinal could be suggestive of a religious cope; a ceremonial robe attributed to the unseen channels lying beneath ground level.
